Oncology

A Girl and Her Dog

Veterinary oncology involves the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Cancer is not a single disease but is a complex of a number of different tumors thus may have many presentations. Because of this variability, cancer can be challenging to diagnose and treat in some patients. Cancer patients are often older and may have other medical problems. Our oncologist also specializes in Internal Medicine thus giving him a unique perspective on your pet's care. Our oncologist can determine and perform the diagnostics tests most appropriate to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. Once the diagnosis is made, our oncologist will give you straightforward options for treatment and advise you of realistic expectations in outcome. Medical oncology, the use of chemotherapy, and surgical oncology are provided in our hospital. During your initial appointment, our veterinary oncologist will examine your pet, obtain a detailed history of signs and symptoms, review all medical records, laboratory results and xrays from your family veterinarian and evaluate current/recent medications. After completion of this, the cancer specialist will offer you a plan of diagnostic testing or treatment and an estimate of costs.
